New Music

Nov 23

My name is Aly and I am a 2015 graduate of the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio.

My favorite thing about Newman at UMD is the dynamic community centered around love of Christ!

What is my favorite saint? Do I have to pick just one? JP2, Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati, Bl. Miguel Pro, etc etc etc….

My favorite Bible verse is… So many….John 10:10 is probably my go-to:

“My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

Of course, I love music too!

My Music

All We Ever Knew – The Head & The Heart is one of my favorite music groups, and I just love this song from their newest album! It is the perfect blend of melancholic nostalgia and carefree, adventurous joy! It always lifts my mood and makes me want to dance.

The Arrow by Josh Garrels – One of my favorite musical artists, Josh never fails to impress me with his incredible falsetto…it brings me to a place, you know? And the lyrics of all his songs are so deep, true to our Catholic identity. This song is about seeking reconciliation with God and one another! What a man, what a song.

My name is Pam Jahnke and I am a PharmD student at UMD, class of 2018.

My favorite saint is St. Joseph of Cupertino and my favorite Bible Verse is Matthew 6:34:

“Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.”

Now let’s talk about music.

My Music

First heard of Justin Hines when one of his songs was used in a TV show I watch and I have been hooked ever since. His songs are a great reminder to look for the silver linings and to live life to the fullest. I especially love the music videos for Say What You Will and Courage, which in the words of one writer, combine “a simple and powerful song with a simple and powerful video that is extraordinarily optimistic and honest.”

My name is Robbie, and I make trees snap in two just by thinking about it.

My name is Robbie Mouton and am an Industrial Engineering major at UMD.

My favorite thing about Newman is hanging out with people who love Jesus as much as I do.

My favorite saints is Saint Rita and my favorite scripture verse is Romans 5:3-5:

“Not only that, but we even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance,
and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope,
and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the holy Spirit that has been given to us.”

Favorite Music

I love my rock, so these choices all come from my natural love of head banging. I love the Foo Fighters, and Saint Cecilia comes off a small EP they did in the Saint Cecilia Hotel in Austin, TX. Gary Clark Jr. is an emerging blues-rock artist, dude can shred it. Underoath is a Christian Hardcore band, but this is one of their slower songs, really like the message.

When I was on a retreat a couple weeks ago, one of the other youth ministers in the area introduced me to Ben Howard. I’d heard a little of his stuff in the past, but it wasn’t until I came across this album my obsession began. Ben Howard is a folk-inspired singer/songwriter whose music enlivens and leaves the listener feeling joyful! I particularly like this song because it reminds me to not get hung up on the little things that don’t go according to my plans–but instead to experience life to the full as Christ desires for us (Jn. 10:10)!

I came across this video scrolling through my facebook news feed one day last year. Bethel, a worship group that aims to express who God is and who we are in Him, held a concert on a mountaintop to worship the Lord overlooking His creation. This song is absolutely incredible and allows the listener to truly enter into a place of authentic worship of our Lord–while at the same time appreciating the beauty of the composition itself. Not to mention how hipster these people are! Just look at them!

Vincent James is an acoustic indie/folk singer-songwriter from Gettysburg, PA.  I discovered his EP on NoiseTrade, where he’d posted his music for free download, and I instantly fell in love with this song.  It reminds me of the Garden of Eden and also leaves the listener uplifted, trusting in hope, in spite of any darkness we might experience in our lives.  If you’re looking for a chill track to enlighten your day, listen to The Dawn” by Vincent James.

A relatively new favorite, Penny and Sparrow are so authentic in their lyrics and moving in their gentle musicality. A friend introduced me to them a couple years ago but I didn’t really get into their music until recently. Penny and Sparrow are great to listen to when you’re in the mood to chill, or are feeling anxious, or just want to be enveloped in vulnerable, relatable lyrics.

I love rocking out to AWOL Nation! This song in particular is great because it has a fantastic beat and singing it at the top of my lungs is a great way to relieve stress while simultaneously lifting my spirits. Plus, if you think about it, we did kill our Hero–Jesus Christ–and the lyrics of this song are a great reminder to shatter false idols in our lives, to never let fear decide our fate, and to reprioritize based on what truly matters in life.
